Learn how an investigation into an online romance scam uncovers 25 victims and over $6MM in funds fraudulently obtained from victims of romance scams and business email compromises.
In May 2019, the U.S. Secret Service, San Francisco Field Office, opened an investigation into a scheme that defrauded a Bay Area resident of $600k. The investigation ultimately uncovered over two dozen victims of romance scams and business email compromises with over $6MM in losses. The over two-year investigation resulted in federal indictments for two individuals on multiple charges of money laundering.

Andrew Frey is a Forensic Financial Analyst with the U.S. Secret Service in San Francisco. Mr. Frey has supported the U.S. Secret Service’s investigative mission since July 2019, focusing on complex money laundering and fraud schemes such as business email compromises and romance or sweetheart scams. Prior to joining the U.S. Secret Service, Mr. Frey spent nearly 15 years at Bank of America, where he investigated organized criminal activity and complex fraud in support of the bank’s BSA compliance program.
