WiCyS Leadership Series: CASTE: The Origins of Our Discontents.

October 20, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Leading with equity, inclusion, and allyship is a conversation where leaders within the WiCyS organization, agree to engage in a conversation from a place of consent for us to learn and grow. The WiCyS Leadership Series: Speak. Listen. Community. cultivates the community and space for that dialogue. In October, WiCyS volunteers in a leadership capacity (student chapter, committees, affiliates, etc.) will be discussing the book, Caste. In Caste, Isabel Wilkerson argues that the racial tensions in the United States are better explained through the lens of caste, not race—a 400-year-old hierarchy placing white people at the top and Black people at the bottom. Wilkerson examines the different caste systems around the world and how they damage the lives of everyone involved, even those at the top. She believes that to understand how to move forward, we must examine the past and the racial structures that keep progress as a nation at bay.

If you are a leader within WiCyS and want to join this session on October 20 at 2 pm CT, email [email protected].
