SUMMARY:WiCyS February Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth \nThe daughter of a scientist who frequently noted her lack of “genius\,” Angela Duckworth is now a celebrated researcher and professor. It was her early eye-opening stints in teaching\, business consulting\, and neuroscience that led to her hypothesis about what really drives success: not genius\, but a unique combination of passion and long-term perseverance. \nIn Grit\, she takes us into the field to visit cadets struggling through their first days at West Point\, teachers working in some of the toughest schools\, and young finalists in the National Spelling Bee. She also mines fascinating insights from history and shows what can be gleaned from modern experiments in peak performance. Finally\, she shares what she’s learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers—from JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon to New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff to Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll. \n“Duckworth’s ideas about the cultivation of tenacity have clearly changed some lives for the better” (The New York Times Book Review). Among Grit’s most valuable insights: any effort you make ultimately counts twice toward your goal; grit can be learned\, regardless of IQ or circumstances; when it comes to child-rearing\, neither a warm embrace nor high standards will work by themselves; how to trigger lifelong interest; the magic of the Hard Thing Rule; and so much more. Winningly personal\, insightful\, and even life-changing\, Grit is a book about what goes through your head when you fall down\, and how that—not talent or luck—makes all the difference. This is “a fascinating tour of the psychological research on success” (The Wall Street Journal). \nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:Webinar | From Creative User to Security Pro: My Unscripted Journey into Cybersecurity
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar with Adobe\, Melissa will share her unconventional path into the field of cybersecurity\, highlighting the twists and turns that led to her current role. Starting as a media production professional working with Adobe products\, she transitioned from editing footage to safeguarding digital assets. Her journey includes volunteering locally\, fulfilling a lifelong dream to join the Peace Corps\, and discovering a passion for computer security while serving abroad. After returning home\, she gained hands-on IT experience as a technician for a fast-food chain\, pursued a master’s degree\, and envisioned a career with the Department of State. Instead\, an unexpected opportunity brought me full circle\, back to Adobe—this time protecting the very tools she once used. Join Melissa as she explores how curiosity\, adaptability\, and embracing the unexpected shaped her career in cybersecurity\, and how you can carve your own path in the ever-evolving world of tech. \n  \nWiCyS is proud to provide members the opportunity to earn CPE/CEU credits for attending WiCyS Webinars live. SUMMARY:WiCyS December Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Your Face Belongs to Us: A Secretive Startup’s Quest to End Privacy as We Know It by Kashmir Hill \nNew York Times tech reporter Kashmir Hill was skeptical when she got a tip about a mysterious app called Clearview AI that claimed it could\, with 99 percent accuracy\, identify anyone based on just one snapshot of their face. The app could supposedly scan a face and\, in just seconds\, surface every detail of a person’s online life: their name\, social media profiles\, friends and family members\, home address\, and photos that they might not have even known existed. If it was everything it claimed to be\, it would be the ultimate surveillance tool\, and it would open the door to everything from stalking to totalitarian state control. Could it be true? \nIn this riveting account\, Hill tracks the improbable rise of Clearview AI\, helmed by Hoan Ton-That\, an Australian computer engineer\, and Richard Schwartz\, a former Rudy Giuliani advisor\, and its astounding collection of billions of faces from the internet. The company was boosted by a cast of controversial characters\, including conservative provocateur Charles C. Johnson and billionaire Donald Trump backer Peter Thiel—who all seemed eager to release this society-altering technology on the public. Google and Facebook decided that a tool to identify strangers was too radical to release\, but Clearview forged ahead\, sharing the app with private investors\, pitching it to businesses\, and offering it to thousands of law enforcement agencies around the world. \nFacial recognition technology has been quietly growing more powerful for decades. This technology has already been used in wrongful arrests in the United States. Unregulated\, it could expand the reach of policing\, as it has in China and Russia\, to a terrifying\, dystopian level.\n\nYour Face Belongs to Us is a gripping true story about the rise of a technological superpower and an urgent warning that\, in the absence of vigilance and government regulation\, Clearview AI is one of many new technologies that challenge what Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis once called “the right to be let alone.” \nRegister HERE
