Who is eligible to apply as a mentee in the Aspiring Professional Program?
The Aspiring Professional Mentorship Program is open to active WiCyS Student Members at the undergraduate level, including international students. Mentees must maintain their student membership status throughout the duration of the program. This program is ideal for students preparing to enter the cybersecurity workforce and looking to build foundational career readiness skills through group mentorship.
If I am graduating in the next semester or already have professional experience, which track should I apply to?
If you are graduating within the next few months and actively applying for full-time roles, you are still eligible for the Aspiring Professional Program. However, if you have already entered the workforce or have at least one year of professional experience, we recommend applying to the Professional Mentorship Program instead, as that curriculum is tailored to mid-career development and individualized mentorship goals. The next Professional Mentorship Program opens in the fall.
What's the time commitment for both mentees and mentors in the Aspiring Professional Mentorship Program?
Mentors:
- 4-month commitment (February through May)
- Meet with your cohort of student mentees once a month for ~1.5–2 hours
- Light Prep using structured materials aligned to NACE Career Readiness Competencies
- Average total estimated time: 4–5 hours per month
Mentees:
- 4-month commitment (February through May)
- Attend cohort meeting once a month for ~1.5–2 hours
- Engage with discussion resources and participate in check-ins
- Average total estimated time: 3 hours per month
Why did you separate the Mentorship Program into two tracks?
We separated the programs to better meet the unique needs of WiCyS members at different stages of their career journey.
The Professional Mentorship program (October–June) is tailored for members who are preparing to enter or already working in the cybersecurity workforce. It focuses on leadership, communications, negotiation, and other advanced professional development topics.
The Aspiring Professional Mentorship program (February–May) was created specifically for student members who are earlier in their university studies. This track offers a shorter, more focused experience that aligns with NACE’s Career Readiness Competencies to help mentees build a strong foundation.
By running separate tracks, we’re able to provide more relevant resources, targeted conversations, and mentorship that resonates with where each participant is in their personal and professional growth.
What's the difference between the professional and aspiring professional mentorship programs?
The Professional Mentorship Program is designed for individuals who are at least 19 years old and are currently in the workforce or within one year of entering it full-time.
The Aspiring Professional Mentorship Program is for student members who are more than one year away from entering the full-time workforce.
How are the mentors and mentees matched?
Matching is facilitated through the Together platform using an automated algorithm that takes into account key profile details such as preferred meeting times, time zones, interests, and program goals. While technical background is one of many inputs, the focus of this program is on professional development, career readiness, and peer-supported growth.
Our goal is to create mentor groups that encourage open dialogue and shared learning. While we strive to place all eligible mentees, final matches depend on mentor availability and scheduling compatibility, and placement is not guaranteed.
All matches are final and intentionally designed to create inclusive, diverse, and impactful mentorship experiences.
What happens if I miss a meeting or need to step away from the program?
We understand that unexpected situations may arise. If you are unable to attend a scheduled meeting, we ask that you notify your cohort (at a minimum, your mentor) at least 48 hours in advance. Clear communication is key to maintaining a strong mentoring relationship.
If you need to step away from the program entirely, please email [email protected] as soon as possible.
Please Note: Participants who miss two or more sessions without notifying their mentor may be removed from the program.
What's the difference in curriculum between the two programs?
Both programs are designed to foster growth and career readiness, but they are tailored to meet participants where they are in their journey.
The Professional Mentorship Program is a 9-month program experience designed for members who are preparing to enter or are already in the workforce. It covers topics such as negotiation, leadership, feedback, and self-presentation. Focusing on real-world skills that support career advancement.
The Aspiring Professional Mentorship Program is a shorter, 4-month track specifically for students earlier in their university studies. Its curriculum aligns with NACE’s Career Readiness Competencies and focuses on foundational topics such as goal setting, communication, teamwork, and professionalism.
Do I need to be located in a specific region or time zone?
No, the mentorship programs are fully virtual and open to WiCyS members worldwide. During the matching process, we do our best to group participants with no more than a 2-hour time difference to support scheduling. Participants are expected to coordinate meeting times with their cohort based on mutual availability.
What is the Together platform, and how do I use it?
Together is the mentorship platform used to manage the program. It supports:
- Scheduling and calendar synchronization (optional)
- Goal-setting and tracking progress
- Access to session guides and resources
Upon acceptance, all participants will gain full access to the program. Onboarding will include a comprehensive guide on utilizing its features.

What are the eligibility criteria for mentors in the Aspiring Professional Program?
Mentors must be active WiCyS Members with at least one year of full-time professional workforce experience in any cybersecurity-related role or industry. Prior mentoring experience is not required. We welcome professionals from all backgrounds who are passionate about guiding undergraduate students and committed to building a more inclusive cybersecurity workforce.
Do I need to have prior mentoring experience? What support will I receive?
Prior mentoring experience is welcome but not required. What matters most is willingness to support and guide others.
As a mentor, you’ll gain access to:
- A comprehensive onboarding session
- A dedicated mentor resource toolkit
- Optional mentor office hours with WiCyS staff
The descriptions mention a “mentee cohort” which sounds different from the typical 1:1 mentoring. Will mentors have multiple mentees? Are all interactions in a group?
We selected a mentoring cohort strategically so that the learning experience can be shared amongst peers. This increases the interaction during the mentor/mentee meeting and develops deeper relationships with those in the cohort so that a community can be formed (within the already WiCyS community). If a mentor/mentee chooses to have 1:1 mentoring, that is completely fine, but the WiCyS requirement is to have the one meeting in a cohort setting once a month.
I see that the mentor time commitment is 4-5 hours/month. Are there particular skillsets/experiences that you are looking for mentors to have?
Any professional woman, man, ally, and advocate is an asset to this program’s success. No matter where we are at in our careers, we have experiences and stories to share that will help others on their journey. The resources/discussion points that WiCyS provides are not specific to a cybersecurity skillset. They are beneficial for any woman in their career!
Can I mentor in both programs? How would that work?
Yes, mentors are welcome to participate in both the Professional and Aspiring Professional Mentorship programs if their schedule allows.
You’ll be matched with different mentee groups for each program if you choose to mentor in both. We recommend reviewing the time commitment and expectations for each before applying to both programs. Participating in both is a great way to support mentees at multiple stages of their development.
Is the curriculum focused on training the mentor? Is there an agenda for the monthly meetings?
Yes, the goal is for WiCyS to provide the mentor with what they need to host their cohort meetings (resources/discussion points). They are to share that information with their cohort and use that information for their guiding point. This takes the stress off the mentor by making the information already available and accessible. Office hours will be made available for mentors throughout the program.

“One of cybersecurity’s biggest challenges is the skills gap for most organizations. As cybersecurity leaders we MUST push for diversity and engrain these viewpoints into the fabric of our programs. Hiring people from diverse backgrounds improves our program because it provides a different viewpoint and way of thinking that we may not have considered before. WiCys is the platform to help connect and embrace diverse viewpoints in a collaborative, supportive, and friendly environment. WiCys amplifies the voice and passion of a diverse community and extends opportunities for career elevation and thought leadership. Being a mentor provides me the opportunity to share my experiences, guidance, and support but I also always walk away learning something new! As a CISO, I strongly support the mission and the passion the members exhibit and am honored to be amongst these amazingly talented individuals! We are stronger together!”

Posie Aagaard
MSIT/Cyber student at the University of Texas at San Antonio
“The WiCyS mentorship program has been an overwhelmingly positive experience. Our mentor and mentees quickly established a comfortable rapport, and I am really enjoying learning from the group. It’s encouraging to hear others’ perspectives and experiences. Biggest takeaway: We are not alone!”

“Through the WiCyS Mentee/Mentor Program, I gained connections with professionals and peers, networking skills, and valuable insight on being a woman in Cyber Security. My experiences in this program helped me with a local career fair and a virtual conference so far, and I know the advice I got from my mentor will continue to help me in the future as well.“

Sheetal Kanade

“A huge thank you to WiCyS mentorship program for this opportunity to mentor a wonderfully warm, inspiring and energetic group of amazing women. Our cohort mantra is to keep it fun but thoughtful, opinionated but non-judgmental and simple but enriching! I am loving every bit of my cohort engagement, connecting and sharing our experiences, discussing some well thought out topics provided by the program framework, and simply supporting and being there for each other through regular meetings and group and one-on-one chats.“
